CV Imaging Flashcards
What is the most common use of Doppler US?
Fetal heart sounds
What is a Duplex Study?
Sound waves that bounce off blood vessels to create pictures and also flow features
When would we use a transesophageal echocardiogram?
For endocarditis or posterior heart structures
What do we use trans thoracic echocardiogram with bubble study for and how does it work?
Introduce saline with bubbles into the IV and watch it go through the heart and see if there are any defects like shunts. Real time assessment of blood flow.
How do we close a PFO?
High dose NSAIDS
What is a paradoxical embolism?
Cross over embolism. Goes venous to arterial
Why would we do a FAST exam?
Detect pericardial effusions
What is becks triad for cardiac tamponade?
Increased JVP
Muffled heart sounds
Low BP
What is the EKG marker for cardiac tamponade?
Low voltage electrical alternans
What is the study of choice for evaluating cardiac anatomy and function?
Trans thoracic echocardiogram
Two conditions that can obscure a transthoracic echo view?
Obesity and pneumonia type stuff
Male patient over 65 with 50 year pack history, what are we thinking?
Abdominal aortic aneurysm
What is a good way to check for arrhythmias on PE?
Check pulses, especially radial pulse.
What is a good study to do for arrhythmias?
Trans esophageal echocardiogram
Why would you order a duplex for carotid arteries?
Signs of cerebral vascular event
