CSMLS Flashcards
What is a task hazard analysis?
Listing the critic steps of a task and then identifying all the hazards associated with each step. Then identifying the applicable control measure for each hazard.
What Are the categories for hazards?
Chemical
Biological
Physical
Ergonomic
Psychological
Are all hazards risks?
No, risk is the potential exposure to a hazard. Hazards on their own are not risks.
What are the three methods for assessing risks?
Probability that exposure will occur
Severity of the outcome of exposure
Frequency workers are exposed to hazard
If all of these are high/severe, risk is high.
What are the four risk groups?
Risk group 1- low individual and low community risk
Risk group 2- moderate individual low community risk
Risk group 3- high individual low community risk
Risk group4- high individual high community risk
Why are ethers considered insidious?
When expose to air and light, ethers oxidize and form peroxide so.
Peroxides are shock sensitive explosives
Discard opened containers after 6 months
Keep away from heat and sunlight
Do not attempt to move old ethers.
Why is Mercury considered insidious?
Vapour is released at a rate which exceeds permissible exposure levels
Vapour levels are proportional to surface levels
Eliminate Mercury wherever possible
Store Mercury in us breakable containers
Clean spills with specific Mercury spill kits or spill vacuums
Why is picnic acid considered insidious?
In dry form has explosive potential similar to TNT
dry picric acid is impact-sensitive
Keep picric wet
Inspect containers and regularly add water
Do not attempt to move picric that has dried out
Why is perchlorate acid considered insidious?
Condenses inside fine hoods, depositing crystals
Crystals are chock semi give explosives
Forms and explosive mixture when mixed with organic materials
Use hoods equipped with water wash down system
Limit use of high concentrations
Why is sodium azide considered insidious?
Toxic in pure form
Dilute solutions poured down metal drain can form metal azide
Can explode if exposed to heat, friction, or shock
Use dilute concentration
If dilute solutions are dumped, chase with 100x amount of water
