Criticisms and Positives Flashcards
What did Bud and Rollnick 1996 say about TTM?
Samples may not fit easily into the five discrete stages, the stages may be continuous rather than discrete
Who gave the worst criticism?
West 2005
What did West 2005 say about TTM?
West states that
- The model is flawed with the most basic tenet the stages of change
- Boundaries of stages are merely lines in the sand
- Classifying individuals in stages assumes everyone has stable plans - people might just stop
- Decision making and process planning draws attention away from reward and punishment
- To much power - people who want to change are more likely to do it
- No evidence shows that moving someone closer to action results in a sustained change in behaviour at a later date
Example backing up West 2005 critique..
‘the measurements between the stages are merely arbitrary lines in the sand’
someone who plans to quit smoking in 30 days will be in the prep stage
BUT
someone who says they want to quit in 31 days would be classed as a contemplator based on DiClementes suggested time frames for each stage
DiClementes Response to West 2005..
Wests critique focuses more on the stages of change rather than the entire model
TTM offer a framework that makes element to human intentional behaviour process not just stages
Stages are considered states not traits
Readiness to change is not a single construct, but a compilation of tasks and accomplishments that can produce momentary and sustained change.
Hodkins states that
The stages have been developed intuitively rather than based on evidence, so there isn’t actually a valid measure of stage
