Herman’s definition of TRAUMA
An inescapable stressful event that overwhelms people’s coping mechanisms.
People who experience trauma: intense fear, helplessness, loss of control, and feel the threat of annihilation.
Criteria for PTSD
1) witness to death or threatened death or serious injury or sexual violence
2) person experiences reoccurring, involuntary, and intrusive nightmares, flashbacks, or memories
3) the person tries to avoid trauma related thoughts or feelings or possible external reminders of trauma
4) lasts longer than a month
5) person has negative alterations in thought and mood.
