Cranial Nerves Flashcards
One
Olfactory Nerve
Olfactory Nerve
One. Smell. (Clinical) Anosmia and parosmia.
Two
Optic nerve
Optic Nerve
Two. Vision. (Clinical) Complete blindness to hemianopsia.
Three
Oculomotor Nerve
Four
Trochlear Nerve
Six
Abducens Nerve
Oculomotor Nerve
Three. Eye muscle control. Innervates all but 2 of the eye ball muscles. The parasympathetic component serves as the efferent limb of the pupillary light reflex. (Clinical) Dilated pupil = mydriasis; drooping of the upper eyelid (ptosis); eye turns down and out (strabismus)
Trochlear Nerve
Four. Eye muscle control. Smallest of the cranial nerves. Innervates only superior oblique. (Clinical) Inability to look down; double vision (vertical diplopia).
Abducens Nerve
Six. Eye muscle control. Innervates only lateral rectus. (Clinical) Inability to abduct eye; Double vision (horizontal diplopia)
Five
Trigeminal Nerve
Trigeminal Nerve
Five. Main sensory nerve for face, teeth, mouth, nasal cavity, and dura mater)
Has 3 branches
V1 = ophthalmic nerve
V2 = Maxillary nerve
V3 = Mandibular nerve
(Clinical). Impaired sensory function on affected side of face. Weakness in muscles of mastication w/ mandible deiating towards side of the lesion. Loss of corneal reflex on affected side. Trigeminal neuralgia is a pain syndrome severe enough to cause grimacing (tic).
Seven
Facial Nerve
Facial Nerve
Seven. Supplies somatic motor innervation to the muscles of facial expression. (Clinical) Paralysis/paresis of facial muscles (Bell’s Palsy). Reduced lacrimation (xerophthalmia). Reduced salivation. Loss of corneal reflex/blinking. Reduced taste.
Eight
Vestibulocochlear Nerve
