Cranial High Yield Flashcards
What are the 2 motions of the midline cranial bones?
1) Flexion
2) Extension
What are the midline cranial bones vs. paired cranial bones?
- Midline (SOVE) = Sphenoid, Occiput, Vomer, Ethmoid
- Paired = all the others
What are the 2 motions of the paired cranial bones?
1) IR
2) ER
In craniosacral flexion the SBS moves ________.
Cephalad

In craniosacral flexion the sacrum moves?
Posterior (aka counternutation)

In craniosacral flexion what is the associated phase of respiration?
Inhalation
In craniosacral flexion which direction do the paired bones move?
ER
What occurs to the AP diameter in craniosacral flexion?
Shortens

In craniosacral extension the SBS moves in which direction?
Caudad

In craniosacral extension the sacrum moves which direction?
Anterior (aka nutation)

In craniosacral extension what is the associated phase of respiration?
Exhalation
*Extension = Exhalation
In craniosacral extension which direction do the paired bones move?
IR
What occurs to the AP diameter in craniosacral extension?
Lengthens

What are the 3 non-physiologic SD’s associated w/ the cranium?
1) Vertical strains
2) Lateral strains
3) SBS Compressions
For cranial torsions what is the coupling (sphenoid/occiput), naming, and axis?
- Coupling: sphenoid and occiput rotate opposite
- Named: HIGHER wing of sphenoid
- Axis: AP-axis
*Pic shows left cranial torsion

For cranial sidebending/rotation SD’s what is the coupling (sphenoid/occiput), naming, and axis?
- Coupling: sphenoid and occiput rotate SAME and sidebend OPPOSITE
- Naming: the convexity in sidebending
- Axis: (2) vertical axes and (1) AP-axis
*Pic shows left sidebending/rotation SD

For cranial vertical strains what is the coupling (sphenoid/occiput), naming, and axis?
- Coupling: sphenoid and occiput rotate same direction about 2 transverse axes (i.e., flexion at the sphenoid coupled with extension at the occiput)
- Named: SBS translation
- Axis: (2) Transverse Axis

For cranial lateral strain what is the coupling (sphenoid/occiput), naming, and axis?
- Coupling: sphenoid and occiput spin in same direction about each vertical axis
- Named: SBS translation (also can name for which wing is higher = highest corner of the parallelogram)
- Axis: (2) Vertical Axes

A parallelogram head is associated with what type of cranial SD?
Lateral strain

Which 4 fingers are used in the vault hold and where is each finger placed?
1) Index finger –> greater wings of the sphenoid
2) Middle finger –> temporal bone (in front of ear)
3) Ring finger –> mastoid process of temporal bone
4) Pinky finger –> squamous portion of occiput

What is the CV4 used for?
Increase CRI
What are the 4 attachments for the Dura?
1) C2
2) C3
3) Foramen Magnum
4) Sacrum
