Corticospinal Tract & Other Motor Pathways Flashcards
1
Q
3 Main Motor and Sensory “Long Tracts”
A
- Lateral corticospinal tract - motor
- Posterior columns - Sensory (vibration, joint position, fine touch)
- Anterolateral pathways - Sensory (pain, temperature, crude touch)
2
Q
Funiculi
A
Ascending and descending white matter columns
3
Q
Dorsal root ganglion
A
Where sensory neurons bifurcate
- One branch conveys info from the periphery
- One branch carries sensory info through dorsal nerve root filaments into dorsal aspect of spinal cord
4
Q
Dorsal (posterior) horn
A
Involved mainly in sensory processing
5
Q
Intermediate zone
A
- in the gray matter
- contains interneurons and certain specialized nuclei
6
Q
Ventral (anterior) horn
A
Contains motor neurons
7
Q
3 parts of spinal cord white matter
A
- Dorsal (posterior) columns
- Lateral columns
- Ventral (anterior) colums
8
Q
Lateral Corticospinal Tract
A
- most clinically important descending motor pathway
- controls movement of the extremities
- pathway:
- >50% originate from primary motor cortex; remainder from premotor and supplementary motor
- Axons travel through corona radiata (fanlike structure)
- Goes through posterior limb of internal capsule
9
Q
Basis Pedunculi
A
- White matter located in the ventral portion of the cerebral peduncles in the midbrain
- middle 1/3 contains corticobulbar and corticospinal fibers
- face, arm, and leg axons arranged medial to lateral, respectively
10
Q
Pyramidal Decussation
A
- where 85% of corticospinal tract fibers cross over to the other side to enter lateral white matter columns forming the lateral corticospinal tract
11
Q
Anterior Corticospinal Tract
A
- the remaining 15% of fibers that do not decussate in the pyramid and travel in the ventral white matter column of the spinal cord
