Coronary Artery Disease Flashcards
What are non modifiable risk factors for CAD
Age
Family history
Race
What are the goals for angina?
Decrease oxygen demand and increase oxygen supply
What drugs are used for angina treatment?
Nitrates -nitroglycerin
Calcium channel blocker - verapamil
B blocker - dilatiazem
What are the modifiable risk factors for CAD?
Smoking Diet Obesity Exercise Stress HTN
What is the acronym used for ischemia management
Oxygen
Nitrates
Asa
Morphine
What drugs are used to treat an MI and why? (4)
Anticoagulants - to prevent clot formation/further extension of an already existing clot
Fibrinolytics - dissolve clot
Thrombolytics - clot buster
Antiarrhythmics - bring cardiac rhythm back to normal
When can fibrinolytics be used for an MI? What are special considerations for them?
Used for STEMI if within 12 hours of first symptoms and PCI not available within 90 mins of first medical contact
Ensure that there are not recent clots that could be broken down and cause a bleed
Why are anti platelets used after someone has suffered an MI?
To decease platelet aggregation
Why are statins used after an mi?
To inhibit cholesterol production thereby decreasing the amount of lipids in the blood and hopefully prevent any further deposition in atherosclerotic plaques
What are actions or medications that would decrease the oxygen demand of the heart?(6)
Rest Morphine B blockers Ca channel blockers Ace inhibitors ARB
What are medications/actions that would increase oxygen supply to the heart?
ASA fibrinolytics PCI Bypass Heparin Anitplatelet Statins Oxygen Nitrates
What are important diagnostics for a suspected MI?
ECG
Troponin I and T
Angiogram
What are good diagnostics for angina/CAD?
Tropinins ECG Echo Stress test Angiogram
Why would you put someone on statins after an MI?
To decrease cholesterol synthesis which could lead to further formation of atherosclerosis if not treated
