Define culture.
A term to describe the shared way of life which binds individuals together into a society. (Shared interests, beliefs and customs)
Define norms.
Set guidelines which define appropriate behaviour. Normal ways of acting.
For example, working hard, road safety, etc.
Define values.
Set of beliefs governing what a social group holds worthwhile and important. Things that mean something.
For example, personal achievement, sanctity of life, etc.
Do values lead to norms?
Yes.
Devine civil intention.
It is used to create the impression that a person is unaware of what is going on around them so that others can maintain the sense that what they are doing or saying is in private.
For example, not communicating with anyone of public transport.
Which sociologist refers to civil intention?
Goffman.
Define social status.
A position on the social hierarchy.
What can social status be influenced by?
Wealth, education, age, gender and accent.
Define achieved status.
Earned status, worked hard for it.
e.g. becoming a doctor
Define ascribed status.
Status you inherit.
e.g. born into the royal family
What is a social role?
The part we play in society.
