Cooling Flashcards
What is a case fan?
also known as a system fan or a cooling fan. Circulates air through the computer case or chassis.
What is an on board fan?
also known as an integrated fan or a system fan, is a fan built directly onto the computers motherboard or other hardware components. They are designed to provide cooling for specific components.
what are common fan specifications?
80mm, 120mm, 200mm
whats an example of some fanless systems?
video servers, tv set top boxes, satellite reciever and media server. The passive cooling these systems use is a heatsink.
what is a heat sink?
a passive cooling device, thats used to dissapate and transfer heat away from a hot component.
what are heat sinks usually made of?
copper or aluminum alloy
how does a heat sink work?
it disapates heat through thermal conduction. the fins and grids on the heat sink increase the surface area, heat is then transferred to cooler air.
how can you make an efficient thermal connection between the component itself and the heatsink?
with thermal paste.
what are other names for thermal paste?
thermal grease or conductive grease
where is thermal paste applied?
between the heat sink and the component
what is another way to conduct heat without the mess of thermal paste?
a thermal pad.
what is liquid cooling?
a liquid coolant which is circulated through the system, usually high performance machines such as gaming or when you are overclocking.
