A

Started off as federalist, turned into a Centralist dictator and led the Mexican army against the Texans in the Texas Revolution

Fredonian Rebellion

A

Haden Edwards was issued a Land Grant in 1825. He upset the colonists in the area when he demanded proof of ownership over their land. The Mexican Government cancelled his land contract. Supports of Edwards rebelled and declared themselves the Independent Nation of Freedonia. The Mexican army quickly put down the small rebellion. Mexico began growing suspicious of Anglo-Americans in Texas.

A

a. Based on Mier y Teran’s recommendations, the law did several things.
i. Outlawed Immigration from the United States
ii. Encouraged Immigration from Mexican and European Families
iii. Added Taxes to imported Foreign Goods

Turtle Bayou Resolutions

A

News reached Turtle Bayou that Santa Anna had won a battle in Mexico against Centralist forces. The news heartened the Texans at Turtle Bayou. On June 13, 1832, they met and adopted the Turtle Bayou Resolutions. In these resolutions, or formal statements, they declared their loyalty to Mexico, but not to the Mexican government. The Texans stated their support for Santa Anna and Mexico’s Federalists.

The Alamo

A

The Battle of the Alamo took place after a 13-day siege of the fort against Texas Soldiers by Santa Anna and the Mexican Army. The Texans were badly outnumbered and surrounded by Santa Anna. Santa Anna told the Texans he would not be taking any prisoners. The battle lasted only 90 minutes and the Texans suffered almost 200 casualties and the Mexican Army suffered almost 600 casualties.

Sam Houston’s Army – Why did they spend so much time retreating?

A

Sam Houston knew he was outnumbered and undertrained so he kept retreating in order to buy time to get his men trained and prepared to fight against Santa Anna. He also knew he was drawing Santa Anna further away from Mexico City and extending his supply line

The Battle of San Jacinto

A

Houston’s army surprised Santa Anna and the Mexican Army at the San Jacinto Battle and was able to win the battle in just 18 minutes. The Mexican army was taking a nap and the Texans caught them off guard. With a victory at San Jacinto, The Texas Revolution was over and they were now free to become an independent Nation.

The Treaties of Velasco - What did each of the two treaties say

A

i. Public Treaty
1. The public treaty included the provision that Santa Anna would never again fight against Texas. Also, Mexican troops were ordered to leave Texas immediately.

ii. Secret Treaty
1. Santa Anna agreed to try to convince Mexico’s government to recognize the independence of Texas. In return Santa Anna was to be released by the Texas government and escorted back to Mexico. Santa Anna also agreed to attempt to make the Mexican government set the Texas boundary at the Rio Grande.
