convection&conduction Flashcards
what is conduction
conduction is the process where vibrating particles transfer energy to neighboring particles by collision
conduction occurs mainly in what state of matter?
Solid
what happens when energy has transferred throughout the whole object?
The energy is usually transferred to the thermal energy store of the surroundings (or anything else touching the object)
what is thermal conductivity?
a measure of how quickly energy is transferred through a material
what is convection?
convection is where energetic particles move away from hotter to cooler regions
convection occurs in what states of matters?
gases&liquids because the particles are much more free to move around in than solids
why do the energetic particles rise during convection?
Because the heated (energetic) particles move faster and the space between individual particles increases causing the density to decrease.
Since liquids & gases can flow, the warmer and less denser particles will rise above the cooler, denser particles
true or false metal holds heat longer
true
what do heated particles during convection when they get to the top?
they cool down and sink (this is how convection current occur)
