Contaception, IUDs And STDs Flashcards
What is contraception?
A way of stopping pregnancy from occurring by either preventing fertilisation or preventing implantation
What does male sterilisation include?
A vasectomy which includes taking a piece out of the vas deferents which takes the sperm from the totes to the penis the tying the ends of the sperm ducts
What does the female sterilisation include?
Cutting the oviducts so the sperm cannot reach the egg cella and fertilisation cant take place
Why do we use barriers?
They ensure the sperm cells don’t reach the egg cells. They are convenient but not very effective
What are condoms?
Thin rubber sleeve that are rolled onto the penis before getting inserted into the vagina. Simple and effective when used correctly. Protects us from sexually transmitted diseases
What are cap diaphragms?
Soft rubber cups with a metal ring that is inserted into the cervix. Prevents super from entering the uterus. Reasonably reliable
What are spermicides?
Chemicals that kill sperm. Not very reliable and are often used as extra precaution with an additional method
What is the rhythm method?
When a woman has her safe period is the time that you need to have intercourse as it is a time in her cycle when no egg is available to get fertilised. Inconvenient and unreliable as it it difficult to tell when those days are
What is the withdrawal method?
[when the male remove his penis from the vagina right before he ejaculates unreliable as the lubrication fluid that comes before semen may have some sperm cells
What are contraceptive pills?
Stops ovaries from releasing eggs by thickening the fluid around the cervix opening. Stops the sperm entering the uterus. Contains hormones in the pills for 21 days, next 7 days take pills with no hormones and on the 28th day the endometrium lining passes through the vagina
What are IUDs?
Intrauterine devices. Small piece of plastic or metal placed in the uterus that prevents the implantation of fertilised eggs. More useful as it can be forgotten about
What are the different types of STDs?
Bacteria, yeast, viruses
What are STDs?
Infections passed from one person to another through sexual contact.
How can they be treated and give some symptoms and examples?
Antibiotic can treat the bacteria and other drugs can treat the viruses and yeast. Mild discharge and pain whilst urinating in both men and women. Syphilis, HIV, AIDS, gonorrhoea, chlamydia and herpes
