What is a Consumer?
A person who buys goods or services for their own use
What is a Good?
A good is something you buy that you can touch or see
What is a service?
A service is something you but is done for you eg… bus ride, haircut, car wash
What are Consumer Requirements? (4)
- Value for money
- High quality products
- Information on products
- Good after sales product
What does a Consumer need to Think About? (8)
- Do I need?
- Can I afford it?
- Any other costs?
- Can I get cheaper elsewhere?
- Do I have space in house?
- Is it safe?
- Any hidden extra charges?
- Any ethical costs?
Do you Have the Same Rights Online as you do in Shops?
Yes
What Information Must the Seller Provide? (5)
- Description of product
- The sellers name and contact details
- Total price including tax and delivery
- Length of contract
- Procedure for cancelling
What do you do if a Good is Faulty? (3)
- Contact seller and request refund
- In refund seller must pay you back within 14 days
- The seller may withhold refund until the product is returned
What is the Cooling off Period? (2)
- If you cancel your service within 14 days of your order your entitled to a refund
- For goods you must return product and may have to pay delivery charges
What Does the Cooling Off Period not Apply to? (4)
- Tailor made goods
- Perishable good (food)
- Gaming or lottery services
- A service which has already started
What is the CAI?
Consumer Association Ireland, it protects consumers in Ireland
What are my Rights? (4)
- A deposit is a parts payments for goods up front
- Seller doesn’t have to return deposits
- If Seller doesn’t keep contract you can have your deposit
- Shopkeeper must offer receipt
What are the Four Rules of the Sales of Goods Act 1980
- Product must be of merchantable quality
- Fit for purpose intended
- Be as described
- Confirm to sample shown
