constructive and destructive waves Flashcards
what are the two types of waves?
destructive and constructive
what wave height do C waves have?
low
what wave length do C waves have?
long
what frequency are C waves?
6-8 per minute
what cross profile do C waves usually have and why?
elliptical due to short wave height and long wave length
swash vs backswash C waves?
have a strong swash allowing them to deposit more material
what do C waves usually form?
ridges and berms
what wave height do D waves have?
high
what wave length do D waves have?
short
what frequency do D waves have?
10-14 per minute
swash vs backswash D waves?
strong backwash
meaing more material is taken away than deposited
why do D waves have a strong backwash?
when they approach the shore they rapidly gain height and plunge meaning there is little forward movement
what do D waves form?
Storm beaches
steep cross profile due to material being constantly taken away
how can the two types of waves form a negative feedback loop?
most beaches have an alternating cycles of the two
C waves promote a steeper beach profile encouraging destructive waves and them as beach profile reduces constrictive waves begin again
