Connective Tissue II Flashcards
What are the sub classifications of connective tissue
-areolar tissue
-adipose tissue
-fibrous tissue
-elastic tissue
Describe areolar connective tissue
-contains many fibroblasts
-widely separated by elastic and collagen fibres
What is the function of areolar CT?
Connects and supports other tissues
Where is loose CT located?
-under skin
-between muscles
-pulp
What are the 2 types of loose CT?
Areolar and adipose tissue
Describe adipose tissue
Consists of fat cells which contain large fat globules in a matrix of areolar tissue
What are the 2 types of adipose tissue
Brown and white
What is the function of adipose tissue
Storage for energy in the form of fat
Describe white adipose tissue
-contributes to approx 2–25% of body weight
Where is white adipose tissue located?
-Supports kidneys and eyes
What is the function of white adipose tissue
Acts as a thermal insulator between muscle fibre and under the skin
What is the function of brown adipose tissue
-metabolised to produced more heat than energy
-contributes to the maintenance of body temperature
Describe fibrous tissue
-dense/rigid connective tissue
-closely packed bundles of collagen fibres with very little matrix
What does fibrous tissue form?
-ligaments
-periosteum
-outer protective layer for some organs
-muscle sheaths forming tendons
Describe elastic tissue
-few cells present
-matrix consists of masses of elastic fibres secreted by fibroblasts
