What is social influence?
When the influence of others can cause individuals to change their behavior
What is conformity?
When the behavior of an individual or small group is influenced by a larger or dominant group
What are the three types of conformity?
- Internalisation
- Compliance
- Identification
What is internalisation?
When someone accepts the majority’s views as their own
In what situation would Internalisation take place?
In unfamiliar situations where you don’t know the ‘correct’ way to behave and therefore look to others for this information
What social influence causes internalisation?
Informational social influence - conforming because of the desire to be right
What is compliance?
Going along with the majority, even if you don’t share their views
In what situation would compliance take place?
When someone want’s to appear ‘normal’ to fit in with the majority and therefore avoid exclusion or rejection from the group
What social influence causes compliance?
Normative social influence - conforming to be liked and/or accepted by a group
What is identification?
When someone conforms to what’s expected of them in order to fulfil a social role
In what situation would identification take place?
When someone wants to fit a specific role in society (e.g a nurse) or when someone is trying to imitate the behaviour of a role model.
