Conflict And Negotiation Flashcards
Cognitive conflict
Conflict related to differences in perspectives and judgments
What is conflict
The process that begins when one party perceives that another party has negatively affected, or is about to negatively affect, something that the first party cares about
Affective conflict
Emotional conflict aimed at a person rather than an issue
What are some sources of conflict?
Communication, structure, personal variables
What is a mediator?
A neutral third-party who facilitates a negotiated solution by using reasoning, persuasion, and suggestions for alternatives
What is an arbitrator?
They have authority to dictate an agreement
What is a consultant?
Skilled and impartial third party who attempts to facilitate problem-solving through communication and analysis, aided by a knowledge of conflict management
Does not try to settle the issues but rather works to improve relationships between the parties so they can reach a settlement for themselves. More of a long-term focus
What is negotiation and what are two forms?
Negotiation is a process in which two or more parties exchange goods or services and attempt to agree upon the exchange rate for them
Distributive bargaining is a negotiation that seeks to divide up a fixed amount of resources; a win lose situation
Integrative bargaining is a negotiation that seeks one or more settlements that can create a win-win solution
Collectivistic vs Individualistic
Collectivistic cultures see people as deeply embedded in social situations where individualistic cultures see people as autonomous
As a result, collectivists are more likely to seek to preserve relationships and promote the good of the group as a whole than individualists.
