Condyloid Joints Flashcards
What are condyloid joints?
- bi-axial joints that permit all angular motions in the frontal & Sagittal plane
What are the movements of condyloid joints?
- flexion/extension
- adduction/abduction
- circumduction
What are the 2 condyloid joints?
- radiocarpal joint
- metacarpophalangeal joint
What is the classification of the radiocarpal joint?
- structural = synovial
- functional = diarthrosis
What are the 4 bones involved with the radiocarpal joint?
- scaphoid, lunate, triquetrum (proximal carpal bones)
- distal radius
What are the 4 ligaments that support the radiocarpal joint?
- dorsal radiocarpal ligament (stabilizes the joint, restricts flexion)
- palmer radiocarpal ligament (connects the radius to the carpal bones which stabilize the wrist)
- palmer ulnocarpal ligament (prevents palmer translocation of the ulnar carpal bones, & allows radial deviation of the wrist, & limits ulnar deviation)
- radial collateral carpal ligament (stabilizes the wrist, limits radial deviation)
What are the 4 muscles that act on the radiocarpal joint?
- extensor carpi radialis brevis/longus
- extensor carpi ulnaris
- assistance from the extensor digitorum
What are clinical findings of the radiocarpal joint?
- radius fractures are one of the most common injuries
What is the classification of the metacarpophalangeal joint?
- structural = synovial
- functional = diarthrosis
What bones are involved with the metacarpophalangeal joint?
- convex heads of the metacarpal bones which are received by the concave bases of the proximal phalanges
What are the 2 ligaments that support the metacarpophalangeal joint?
- proper/accessory collateral ligaments
- deep transverse ligament
What are the acting muscles of the metacarpophalangeal joint?
- all the forearm muscles
What is a functional movement of the metacarpophalangeal joint?
- gripping
What is a clinical finding of the metacarpophalangeal joint?
- gamekeeper’s thumb or skiers thumb is a fairly common injury of the ulnar collateral ligament of the MCP of the thumb
- the most common way to injure this is by falling onto an outstretched arm with an abducted thumb
