Q

How do you calculate the minimum size of the neutral conductor for a building/system?

A

Rule 4-024 states that there won’t be any reduction in size of a neutral conductor for the portion of the load that consists of electric-discharge lighting, non-linear loads, or the first 200A of the unbalanced load.

  1. Subtract 200A from the maximum unbalanced load of the building
  2. If applicable, subtract any electric-discharge lighting and non-linear loads from the maximum unbalanced load
  3. Apply a 70% demand factor to whatever is left of the maximum unbalanced load
  4. Add the 200A, electric-discharge lighting, and non-linear loads back into the remainder of the unbalanced load
  5. Select your neutral conductor according to this ampacity
  6. Use table 2 or table 4 to select your conductor

Q

When the question gives you the wire size, how do you apply the derating factors?

A
  1. Multiply the derating factors together to get the total derating factor
  2. When you’re given the wire size, you multiply the derating factors by the ampacity of the conductor

Q

When the question gives you the load (Amps) how do you apply the derating factors?

A
  1. Multiply the derating factors together to get the total derating factor
  2. When the question gives you the load, you divide the derating factor by the load to determine the maximum current you could run through the conductor
