Conductor and Insulator Flashcards
conductor is?
is a material that allows (usually electrons) to flow through it easily, this is because it has free-moving electrons.
conductors tend to be
metals
best to worst conductors
silver
copper
iron
carbon
water
air
glass
rubber
metals conduct electricity very well because
current is the rate of flow of charged particles
Insulator
is a material that does not allow flow of charge through them very easily, this is because it has no free-moving electrons
examples of insulators
Rubber, plastic, glass and wood
some non-metals:
graphite is conductor
charging an insulator by rubbing
-when polythene rod is rubbed with a woollen cloth
-the friction causes the electrons transfer from the wool to the polythene.
-this causes the woollen cloth to become a positive charge, and the polythene to be a negative charge
