What is ascites?
Name a common cause of this?
-Abnormal build up of fluid in the abdominal peritoneal cavity (may cause swelling)
- Liver Cirrhosis
Aspiration is the process of breathing in and out. What else can aspiration mean in the medical world? (2 definitions)
- Accidentally breathing in a foreign object
- Medical procedure that removes something (Air, fluids, or bone fragments) from an area of the body.
Example: removing ascites fluid from the belly area
What is the act of auscultation?
Listening to organs using a stethoscope to hear for abnormalities
What is boerhaave’s syndrome?
Spontaneous/effort perforation of the oesophagus caused by severe strain or vomiting
What is another medical term for vomiting?
Emesis
What is a shunt?
A passageway that is made to allow blood or other fluid to move from one part of the body to another.
Example: a surgeon may implant shunt to drain cerebrospinal fluid from the brain to the abdomen.
