Concepts from Mid Terms Flashcards
Enantiomers
Pair of compounds that are non-superimposable mirror images of each other
Epimers
A particular type of diastereomer in which only one stereocentre has changed configuration
Diastereomers
A pair of compounds with the same connectivity but are non-superimposable non-mirror images of each other
Atropisomerism
Stereoisomers arising due to hindered rotation around a single bond
Resolution
Process by which a racemic mixture is separated into its two constituent enantiomers
Specific rotation
A property of chiral chemical compounds in which plane-polarized light changes orientation when passed through a sample
Meso compound
A non-optically active, non-chiral centre stereoisomer that contains at least two stereocentres
Pseudoasymmetric centres
A tetrahedral carbon bonded with four different substituents, where two have the same constitution and differ only in absolute configuration
Racemization
Conversion of an optically-active compound/mixture into racemic form
Entrainment
Induced crystallization of one enantiomer over another
Enantiotopic
The relationship between two groups in a compound which, if one or the other is replaced, results in enantiomers
Chiral shift reagent
A reagent added to an enantiotopic mixture to aid in determining enantiomeric excess through NMR analysis
Diastereotopic
The relationship between two groups in a compound which, if one or the other is replaced, results in diastereomers
Prochiral centre
Tetrahedral carbon that can be converted to a stereocentre by changing one of the attached groups
Name the four symmetry elements
