Computer Performance Flashcards
When do we use virtual memory?(1)
Virtual memory is a section of volatile memory created temporarily on the storage drive (secondary storage) . It is created when a computer is running many processes at once and RAM is running low.
What is NAS?(4)
Network attached storageis usually provided in the form of a dedicated stand-alone device that is installed as part of a LAN
There are small NAS devices for home networks, and much larger devices for business use
The user will see the drive listed alongside their local storage
They do not need to be aware of its physical location, although they will lose access in the event of network (or device) failure
What is cloud storage? (1)
Cloud storageis a service model where data is transmitted andstoredon remotestoragesystems
What is RAM? (2)
Random Access Memory is the memory that is volatile meaning that when the computer is turned off, everything that was stored in the RAM is deleted. Ram is made of memory locations that have physical placements in the computer.
What is the CPU?
The Central Processing Unit is often referred to as the brains of the computer since it is responsible for processing instructions and data.
What is the GPU?
A graphics processing unit is a specialised electronic circuit which is very efficient at manipulating computer graphics and image processing.
In a PC, a GPU may be present on a graphics card.
