Investigate user interface design for individuals and organisations
Text based Interface / Command Line Interface (CLI)
CLIs are text-based. Users control the computer by typing in commands
Speech / natural language interface
A type of user interface in which the user input is submitted mainly via speech.
Graphical User Interface / WIMP
A visual way of interacting with a computer using items such as windows, icons, menus and a pointer - used by most modern operating systems.
Sensor interface
Detects and responds to the environment around them. They can be responsive to heat, light, sound, movement or patterns.
Menu / forms interface
An interface presented by a defined list of options that the user may select rather than type.
User Interface
A piece of software that allows users to interact with their devices
Software
Allows users to complete tasks or to create something. There are different types of software to control hardware and applications such as word processing
Accessibility
How devices are designed for people with disabilities to use with ease.
Form Controls
These include buttons, tick boxes and option boxes to enable the user to enter information.
Navigate / Navigation
How a user works their way around the software
Pixels
The smallest dots that make up the screen on our devices. An image is made up of millions of pixels.
Intuitive
Easy to understand. In this context a user should should be able to understand and interact with an interface instinctively.
Operating System
This controls the whole operation of a computer system such as mobile phones, tablet computers or PCs.
Platform
The computer [hardware] and operating system [software] on which applications can run.
Keyboard Shortcuts
Combinations of keystrokes or a sequence of keystrokes which commands the software.
