Compendium One Flashcards
Define the term anatomy.
The branch of science that deals with the structure of
organisms (humans) and their parts
The organisation of living things
What are the different levels of anatomy?
Gross anatomy
Surface anatomy
Microscopic anatomy
Developmental anatomy
Explain Gross Anatomy. How many types and their names?
It is MACROscopic.
Structures examined without the aid of a microscope.
Does not require a microscope to examine the structures.
2 types
Systemic and Regional.
Explain systemic and regional gross anatomy.
Systemic: studying the body system
by system
Regional: studying the body area by
area
What is Surface anatomy?
it is MACROscopic.
It is the study of the external form of the body in relation to deeper structures within.
What is Microscopic anatomy and give examples.
Microscopic anatomy requires a microscope
It is the study of the internal structures of the body
e.g., histology (tissues) and cytology (cells)
What is developmental anatomy?
The study of the structural changes that occur in the body from fertalisation to death.
what is physiology?
The branch of science that deals with the normal function of living organisms (humans) and their parts The way in which an organism (or its parts) function
What are the three levels of physiology?
Molecular
Cellular
Systemic (e.g., Neurophysiology, Cardiovascular, etc.)
Structural and functional organization of the human body.
explain it in terms of the chemical level
How atoms (e.g. hydrogen, carbon) interact and combine into molecules (e.g. DNA, RNA, sugar, water)
Explain the structural and functional organization of the human body in terms of cellular level
How molecules interact and combine to form organelles (e.g.
nucleus, mitochondrion) of a cell.
Explain the structural and functional
organization of the human body in terms of the tissue level
How numerous similar cells, and the tissue around them, join to form a tissue type (eg smooth muscle tissue).
explain the structural and functional
organization of the human body in terms of the organ level
Two or more tissue types form an organ that performs one or
more function/s (e.g. bladder)
explain the structural and functional
organization of the human body in terms of the organ system level
A group of organs performing a common function (e.g. kidneys, bladder, ureters) make up a system (urinary system)
define organism level
Anything living thing considered as a whole
