Explain the artist use of a wide range of colours

Evidence: Shown through the pale pink on the dress, bright red orange yellow on the Sun and moon, green natural colours on the plants and neutral colours/ tones of the buildings
Effect: This creates a diverse colour palette with a wide range of colours allowing the eye to move across the painting
Explain the artist use of the desaturated colours
Fact: Frida Kahlo uses desaturated colours
Evidence: Shown on the building on the right hand side of the painting, and on the temple stairs on the left-hand side of the painting, along with the cloudy grey sky
Effect: This creates a more dull and depressing mood and atmosphere
Explain the artist use of complimentary colours
Fact: The painting has complimentary colours
Evidence: This is shown as the Sun is bright orange next to the dull, blue grey sky. The Mexican flag has a red and green stripe, and there are many plants with green stems leaves and red flowers
Effect: This allows elements of the painting to stand out and appear more bold due to the contrast between the colours
