Cognitive Psychology Flashcards
What is fluid intelligence?
Ability to reason fast and abstractly.
📌The younger one is the more likely that they have a higher fluid intelligence.
What is crystallized intelligence?
Intelligence acquired from accumulated learning and dev’t of verbal skills.
📌Increases with age because the older one is, the better they are able to use their acquired knowledge creatively. The older one is, the more they learn and develop their knowledge.
Differences between memory of a young person and older person
The difference between memory at a young age and that of an old person is that a younger person is able to remember something faster than an older person. This is because as one grows older, one’s neural activity declines which affects how quickly they can perform cognitive skils/tasks.
NB. Older people are still able to remember more meaningful information than useless facts.
What is Prospective Memory?
The type of memory in which one is able to remember habitual tasks.
Prospective memory declines as one grows older.
What are the cognitive changes as people age?
📌Memory
As people age, the rate at which one can recall memories declines. This is because as one grows older, one’s neural activity declines which affects the ability to perform cognitive tasks.
📌Intelligence
As one grows older, fluid intelligence declines and. crystallized intelligence increases.
What are Piaget’s different stages of development?
Sensorimotor Stage: Birth to 2 years
Preoperational Stage: 2-7 years
Concrete operations stage: 7-11 years
Formal operations stage : 12 years and older
