Cognitive Flashcards
How do cognitive learning theorists say we learn?
Through an internal process which happens in stages
The stages are then combined
Individuals possess cognitive structures for understanding and decide what’s important to learn
What are the 3 stages?
1- Overall picture is understood
2- Skill is gained in performing
3- Confidence in task increases
What does the cognitive approach also suggest, regarding the learner?
The learning is controlled by the learner
They must be motivated and willing
If not they switch off and do not take anything in
Lack of enthusiasm makes it difficult to be taught
What is Cognitive Behavioural Therapy?
Treats disorders (depression)
Changes thoughts through talking
Mindset goes from fixed to growth
(negative to positive thoughts)
Aim of Blackwell et al 2007
To find out if implicit theories in adolescence can affect maths achievement
Method of Blackwell et al 2007
2 groups
1-high achievers, similar socioeconomic backgrounds, had growth mindsets (believed intelligence was malleable)
2-low achievers, lower socioeconomic status, had fixed mindsets (believed intelligence was fixed) - participated in 8 wk workshop on mindsets
Results of Blackwell et al 2007
Group 2 improved in grades, group 1 didn’t
Relevant 8wk course can change mindsets to result in better grades
Evaluation of Blackwell et al 2007
Strength: longitudinal design, allows changes in performance to be determined
Weakness: non experimental, some factors cannot be controlled (extraneous variables)
