coevolution Flashcards
coevolution
reciprocal evolutionary change between interacting species, driven by natural selection
mutualism
positive positive relationship between species that raises each others fitness
commensalism
positive neutral relationship that benefits one species but has a neutral effect on the other
geographic mosaic theory (hotspot, coldspot)
populations in different geographic ranges experience different levels of selection (stronger in one area, hotspot, and nether selection on host or parasite, coldspot)
hotspot = strong selection on both species
coevolutionary alternation
when one species is in an antagonistic relationship with several species
coevolutionary arms races
Coevolutionary arms races describe the reciprocal evolution of traits in interacting species, driven by competitive pressures to gain reproductive or survival advantages over each other.
attenuated (stop or slow it down) coevolution
virus so mf good at rabbits died before they could pass it down thus making the virus not too good in the end
mimicry
mimicking another specie for your own benefit (eg. hoverfly looking like a wasp)
