Climate Change, Checkpoint 1 Flashcards
What is the Anthropococene?
The epoch we might be currently in.
Why is it debatable that we are in the Anthropocene epoch?
It is not universally accepted yet, some scientists still believe we are in the Holocene epoch.
How can a start point of a new epoch be defined?
By a golden spike; this is when there has been a major event with long terms changes to the Earth and there must be physical evidence to prove the new epoch.
What is the greenhouse effect?
The process through which heat is trapped near Earth’s surface by substances known as ‘greenhouse gases.’
What is the enhanced greenhouse effect?
The increased concentration of greenhouse gases in the atmosphere, caused by humans.
What are the main greenhouse gases?
Carbon Dioxide, methane, fluoro gases, nitrous oxide.
What are some of the main human activities that emit greenhouse gases?
Energy for transport, manufacture, buildings and agriculture.
How have Carbon Dioxide levels changed over time?
Populations have raised, Rapid development of the world, More fossil fuels are required nowadays.
What 3 countries emit the most carbon emissions?
China, America and India.
Why do carbon emission rates vary between different countries?
Wealthier countries have more access to to fossil fuels, transport and electricity; therefore they will emit more carbon emissions then other, less developed, countries.
