individual examples of classism
not being friends with someone because they are of a certain class (usually lower)
institutional examples of classism
Banks will more than likely not lend money to individuals who do not have any collateral in place. The system of borrowing created by banks were not created for those in need, but was created to sustain those who have money and power, which would be considered upper or ruling class (the wealthy) and possibly the middle class.
ideological examples of classism
seen in advertising - example: “choosy moms choose Jif”, implying that if you buy less expensive, store brand peanut butter then you care less about your kids
internalized examples of classism
the belief that poor people must not work as hard, so classist institutions are fair
Be able to explain how a belief in the United States as a meritocracy is related to classism.
A meritocracy is a society in which you gain wealth and power based solely on ability and talent. Many people believe the United States is a meritocracy, and it leads to the belief that classism doesn’t actually exist - poor people are poor simply because they don’t work hard enough and rich people are rich because they do. It assumes the playing field is equal and that opportunity is universal, when it is not, and believing that classism doesn’t actually exists only serves to perpetuate it b/c how can you solve a problem if you won’t even acknowledge that it exists?
