Classification of plants Flashcards
Why are plants autotrophs
Plants are autotrophs because they get their energy from the sun through photosynthesis.
What is chlorophyll
Chlorophyll is the light absorbing pigment
What is the definite cellulose cell wall made up of
Glucose
What does the permanent vacuole contain
It contains cell sap (a mixture of sugars, salts and water)
What do the ribosomes do
Site of protein synthesis
What are the four main groups under the plant kingdom
Algae, Mosses, Ferns and seed plants
What are the main parts of a fern
1) Fronds
2) Simple true roots
3) Rhizome
4) Stem
What is the phloem
The living tissue in vascular plants that transport the soluble organic compounds made during photosynthesis to the rest of the plants
What is the xylem
The vascular tissue in plants, which conducts water and dissolved nutrients upwards from the root.
What does sporangia do
It releases spores
What is the brown patch on the underside of a fern’s leaf made up of
Sporangia
What are the fronds with spores called
Fertile fronds
What are angiosperms
Angiosperms or flowering plants are plants with enclosed seeds
What are the two types of angiosperms
Monocotyledons and Dicotyledons (eudicotyledons)
What are the differences between monocotyledons and dicotylendons
1) Mono has long , narrow leaves while di has broad leaves
2) Mono has parallel veins while di has branching veins
3) Mono has one cotyledon while di has two
