Classification of Matter Flashcards
Matter
Matter is made up of Mass and Voulume
Mass
The amount of Matter is in an object
Elements
Something that cannot be chemically broken down into a simpler substance
Compounds
A substance in which there are 2 or more atoms that are combined in fixed proportions
Mixture
Mixtures are made up of two or more substance that can be separated
Heterogeneous Mixture
A mixture in which different materials can be distinguished
Homogeneous Mixture
A mixture in which two or more gaseous, liquid, or solid substances are blended evenly
Physical Properties
Any characteristic of a material that you can observe without changing the identity of the substances
Physical Change
A physical change is a change in size, shape, or state of matter for an object
Chemical Properties
characteristics of a substance that indicates it can change chemically
Solution
a homogeneous mixture of solvent and solute molecules
Suspension
A heterogeneous mixture in which visible particles settle
Adhesion
Adhesion is the ability to stick to other surfaces.
Cohesion
Cohesion is the ability to stick to itself
Colloid
A type of mixture with particles that are larger but still do not settle
Tyndall Effect
scattering of a beam of light by a medium containing small suspended particles
Condensation
the process where water vapor becomes liquid
Evaporation
the process by which a liquid turns into a gas
Chemical change
a change of materials into another, new materials with different properties and one or more than one new substances are formed
