Piano role?

A

Provides harmony and rhythm by comping

  • plays chords in jazz voicings
  • plays in a suitable register of keyboard(middle)
  • uses syncopated rhythms
  • ”locks in” with the drummer
  • helps the soloist by providing clear ” chords, strong rhythm and suggesting different harmonies (reharmonization).
  • comps for himself during his solo

Bass role?

A

Provides the “pulse” of the music by walking bass:

  • plucks one note per beat
  • locks in with ride cymbal
  • outlines the chord progression
  • sets up the upcoming harmony
  • plays with a swing feel
  • listens to the soloist and pianist for any adjustments or reharmonizations
  • is prepared to change to a more melodic/interactive role if it is required

Drums role?

A

Provides time, swing and energy.
-right hand plays the ride pattern
-left foot usually provides two and four on the HH
-left hand is free to accent and color on snare, toms and cymbals
-kick drum can play on every beat w/bass “four on the floor”, or more commonly is used to accent certain beats
-can use wire brushes and mallets for a softer sound
Drummers can control dynamics, energy level and texture of a group performance–more than anyone else.

Soloist role?

A

The soloist is responsible to “front” the band by:

  • playing the melody
  • create an improvised solo that fits the chord changes
  • edits the solo as he plays to avoid repition and getting lost
  • swing with the group concept
  • respond to rhythmic and harmonic ideas given by the rhythm section
  • project above the band
  • create a concept that fits with the band
