What is Affirmative Action?
Procedures designed to eliminate unlawful discrimination of races. This means that additional factors are considered when offering a person an opportunity.
What are two cases brought against U Michigan?
Gratz v Bollinger- the system for general admissions was unconstitutional, as it disadvantaged everyone.
Grutter v Bollinger- Admissions to the law school did promote equal opportunities.
What are civil rights?
Curbs on the power of majorities to make decisions that may harm certain members of society.
What are Civil liberties?
Limitations placed on the government, meaning that they can’t interfere with individuals freedoms.
Where can US civil Liberties be found?
The Bill of Rights
What was Proposition 209?
Passed in California in 1996. Ruled out all affirmative action for employment and some universities in the state.
