Why is it important to have a structure in our government
Our country, and the world, are a much bigger and more complex diverse group of humans, so it is especially important to have some structure to meet the needs and goals of individuals, and society as a whole.
Definition of government
It is a group of people who have the power to make and enforce laws for a country or area. There are different types of government (political systems)
Definition of jurisdiction
Each level of government has jurisdiction (authority/control/power) over different areas.
3 levels of government and their geographical jurisdictions
Federal – power over national concerns
Provincial – power over the particular region (province or territory) concerns
Municipal – power over city or town concerns
Democracy (what it is?
As a democracy then, the government election system is set up to represent what the majority of people value as important (ideally). Elections happen at all levels of government.
Majority vote meaning
A minority government can happen when the leading party does not have more than half the votes and therefore has to work with another party to get their decisions to be accepted in parliament.
3 types of powers – name and explanation
- The federal government for national issues
- Provincial dealt with regional concerns.
- Municipal deals with town/city concerns
What is a constitution
a legal document; that describes how our government is organized and elected; includes a charter of rights and freedoms
Constitutional monarchy
Canada also recognizes the British monarch as it’s own based in 1763 when Canada became a British colony after defeating the French.
Difference between Governor General and Lieutenant Governor
The Governor General is the Queen’s federal leader in Canada. Lieutenant Governors represent the Queen in each province.
What are the government buildings at each level
Federal - House of commons and senate
Provincial - Legislative Assembly
Municipal - City Council
