Circulartory System Flashcards
Importance of Circulatory System
-Carries nutrients and oxygen to cells
-Carries waste products from cells
-Delivers chemical messages throughout the body
Where does oxygenated blood flow
In the left half of the heart
-pumps it to body tissue
Where does deoxygenated blood flow
The right side of the heart
-pumps it to the lungs
What do AV valves do
Stop blood from flowing backwards through heart chambers
Coronary Circulation
Coronary arteries and veins supply heart with blood
Erythrocytes
Red blood cells
-carry oxygen to body cells
Leukocytes
White blood cells
-protect against infection
Thrombocytes
Platelets
-allow blood to clot
Hypertension
High blood pressure
-causes damage to blood vessels and can cause heart disease or stroke
-treated with healthy diet and exercise
Atherosclerosis
Fatty deposits (plaques) build up in the lining of arteries -narrows passages
Heart attack
Heart is deprived of oxygen from a blockage in the coronary arteries
-caused by smoking, age, stress, obesity
-symptoms: angina, fatigue, dizziness
-stents are placed to normalize blood flow
Two types of stroke
-Hemorrhagic
-Ischemic
Hemorrhagic Stroke
Blood leaks into brain tissue
Ischemic Stroke
Clot stops blood supply in one area of the brain
Stroke causes and symptoms
-Smoking, age, poor diet, obesity, stress
-weakness and numbness, dizziness, slurred speech
