Cholinergic Drugs Flashcards
Bethanechol (MOA, Indications, contraindications, AEs)
[Muscarinic Agonist]
MOA: acts like ACh, binds and stimulates muscarinic receptors (+ nicotinic sometimes)
Indications: Post-operative ileus, urinary retention
CI: Asthma, COPD, Urinary/GI obstruction
AE’s: GI troubles, urinary urgency, vision problems
Pyridostigmine (MOA, Indications, contraindications, AEs)
[Carbomoylating Cholinesterase Inhibitor]
MOA: carbomoylates AChE (making it inactive) –> inc. ACh
Indications: myasthenia gravis
CI: Asthma, COPD, Urinary/GI obstruction
AE’s: GI troubles, urinary urgency, vision problems, musculoskeletal problems (cramping + myalgia)
Vecuronium (MOA, Indications)
[Nm antagonist]
MOA: [Nm antagonist] Binds + blocks Nm receptor (no stimulation)
Indication: surgery –> muscle paralysis
Succinylcholine (MOA, Indications)
[Nm agonist]
MOA: binds and activates Nm receptors, but no degradation (continuous stimulation via depolarization blockade)
Indication: surgery –> muscle paralysis
Atropine (MOA, Indications, contraindications, AEs)
[Muscarinic antagonist]
MOA: blocks muscarinic receptors
Indications: Bradycardia, AV conduction block
CI: glaucoma, urinary + GI obstruction
AE’s: Xerostomia, inc. body temp (dec. sweating), urinary retention, constipation, blurred vision, tachycardia
Oxybutynin (MOA, Indications, contraindications, AEs)
[Muscarinic antagonist]
MOA: blocks muscarinic receptors
Indications: overactive bladder
CI: glaucoma, urinary + GI obstruction
AE’s: Xerostomia, inc. body temp (dec. sweating), urinary retention, constipation, blurred vision, tachycardia
Ipratropium (MOA, Indications, contraindications, AEs)
[Muscarinic antagonist]
MOA: blocks muscarinic receptors
Indications: rhinorrhea, asthma/COPD
CI: glaucoma, urinary + GI obstruction
AE’s: Xerostomia, inc. body temp (dec. sweating), urinary retention, constipation, blurred vision, tachycardia
