Chem yr 11 basics Flashcards
What is an inquiry question?
An inquiry question is a question which defines what is being investigated
What is a hypothesis?
A hypothesis is a scientific prediction that uses previous knowledge and information to determine the outcome of an experiment
Is a theory a hypothesis?
yes
What is the difference between a theory and a principle?
A theory is a hypothesis supported by a great deal of evidence and information from various sources.
A principle is a THEORY that is strongly supported by evidence and is considered to be scientific law.
What is the difference between a hypothesis and a prediction?
A hypothesis is a scientific prediction that is tested through an experiment. A prediction states what will happen within the results of the experiment itself.
What is the independent variable?
The independent variable is the variable which is chosen on purpose and changed throughout the investigation.
What is the dependent variable?
The dependent variable is the variable that changes based on the independent variable. It is the variable that is measured or observed.
Give an example of an independent and dependent variable
E.g. The change in temperature of a chemical compound affects the rate of reaction when combined with another substance
Independent Variable - The temperature of the compound
Dependent Variable - The rate of reaction (How long it takes to react based on different temperatures)
E.g. 2 The amount of sunlight affecting the growth of the plant
Independent Variable - The amount of sunlight shining on the plant
Dependent Variable - The change in height/ growth of the plant
What is a controlled variable?
A controlled variable is a variable that is kept constant throughout the experiment in order to enhance the validity of the experiment
What makes a good hypothesis?
- A statement (If… Then… approach)
- Be based on information contained in the inquiry question or purpose
- Be worded so that it can be tested in an experiment
- MUST INCLUDE AN INDEPENDENT AND DEPENDENT VARIABLE
