What were Early Norman castles built off
Early Norman castles were built of wood
What disadvantages did wood have as defence
It could set on fire easy and is easily broke through
What were later Norman castles built off
Stone
What were the advantages of stone castles
Much harder to break through they last 10 time longer. Did not set on fire
Think of one disadvantage of Norman stone castle
They take ages to build
The parts of a castle are
- Battlements
- Spiral staircase
- Dungeon
- Cellar
- Foodstore
- Great Hall
- Dormitory
The Normans thought a stone castle made them
Look wealthy, superior, intimidating, clever, creative builders.
What is a motte and bailey
The motte is a hill witch the castle usually sits on. The bailey is below the hill but has a stone or wooden wall around it and it contains the houses and market
What are the stone defences
- Batter Base- slopes walls at the bottom of the castle
- Well- water supply inside the castle
- drawbridge- defence for a castle entrance
- moat or ditch- this is dug around the castle
- Slit windows- too narrow to climb or shoot into
- spiral staircase- disadvantage to right hand attackers
- Elevated entrance- impossible to use a battering ram to enter the castle
- portcullis- metal gates
- battlements- protect soldiers
- trip step- one step steeper than the rest
- thick walls- take longer for attacker to break
Name the methods for attacking a castle
Trebuchet - a large weapon used to fling heavy objects against castle walls
Mangonel- simialar to a trebuchet but has ropes
Siege tower- used to reach top of castle walls
Tunnelling- digging under castle walls and entering inside of the castle
Starvation- surround the castle until they die
Battering ram- used to break the strong gates of a castle
