Primogeniture
Law that declared only the eldest sons were able to inherit land.
Joint-Stock Company
A company owned jointly by its stockholders; investors could pool their capital.
Indentured Servant
Someone under contract to work without pay, in order to pay off a debt or loan. They typically served 7 year contracts.
Charter Colony
Created by a royal charter from the King. Crown established the rules that the colony had to live under.
Proprietary Colony
Settlements given to people close to the royal family. The people who owned the colony could govern it as they saw fit.
Crown Colony
Crown has total control of legislation and administration in the colony. These are usually secured through wars and are a valuable administration tool.
Lord Baltimore
Founded Maryland, created religious freedom in North American colonies (refuge from Catholics fleeing the Protestant Reform).
James Oglethorpe
Founded the Georgia Colony after a long period of no new colonies being established. Dedicated to reforming the prison system and was repelled by the Spanish attacks on Georgia.
Powhatan
Leader of the Native Americans living in and around Jamestown. He united many tribes and provided for the people of Jamestown.
Spanish Armada
Large fleet of Spanish ships set out to invade England.
Sir Francis Drake
English explorer sent by Queen Elizabeth I to raid the Spanish ships and settlements for gold; he was very successful.

Roanoke Island.
What was the first permanent English settlement?
Jamestown.
First Anglo-Powhatan War
Clashes between settlers of Virginia and the Powhatan Confederacy. Efforts were led by Lord De La Warr
Second Anglo-Powhatan War
Last-ditch efforts by the Indians to get rid of the Virginians. The resulting peace treaty formally separated the Native American areas from the white areas.
