Chapter One - Light And Life Flashcards
Light
The portion of the electromagnetic spectrum that humans can detect with their eyes.
Photon
Discrete particles or packets of energy.
Electromagnetic radiation
Self-propagating waves which consist of both electrical and magnetic waves which are orientated at 90 degrees to each other.
Pigment
A molecule that can absorb photons of light.
Wavelength
The distance between two successive peaks of electromagnetic radiation.
Retinal
A pigment molecule involved in vision.
Action spectrum
Graph produced by plotting the effectiveness of light at each wavelength in driving photosynthesis.
Photoreceptor
A sensory receptor that detects the energy of light.
Rhodopsin
The retinal-opsin photopigment.
NADPH
Nicotinamide adenine dinucleotide phosphate
ATP
Adenosine triphosphate
Pigments and conjugated systems
Double/single bonds which delocalize electrons making the pigment molecules more stable by lowering its overall energy.
Eye
The organ animals use to sense light.
Phytochrome
A blue-green pigmented plant chromoprotein involved in the regulation of light-dependent growth process.
Photomorphogenesis
The normal developmental process activated when seedlings are exposed to light. (Phytochrome facilitates this)
