Chapter Four Concepts Flashcards
What is it called when a hydrocarbon lacks a pi bond? Also can be seen as lacking double bonds.
An alkane
A flexible molecule is one that adapts to different shapes, or conformations. Studying these different conformations is called what? What does studying these conformations help us achieve?
Conformation analysis. In relation to like HIV medication, studying this different conformations, especially in alkane or cycloalkanes helps us understand the flexibility of certain molecules and how they can serve multiple purposes as viruses or diseases evolve.
How do we name compounds?
By utilizing the IUPAC nomenclature systematic naming process.
What is the location of the alkyl group named?
Locant
What is it called when there is a carbon skeleton that contains 2 rings connecting to one another?
Bicycloalkane
How do you avoid drawing the same constitutional isomer?
Follow the IUPAC rule for naming.
How can you conduct combustion under experimental conditions? And what happens if two reactions contain the same number of moles?
We can utilize the calorimeter to accurately measure the heat of combustion. If two reactions contain the same number of moles, they can react differently due to how it is structured.
Combustions with more branches tend to be lower in energy, what is their stability?
They are more stable than their straight chain alkanes counterparts.
What is it called when atoms are separate by an angle of 60 degrees?
Torsional angle
What is it called when electron clouds are repelling one another, causing an unfavorable interaction? does it increase or decrease the energy?
Steric interaction, an it increases the energy consumption.
What is it called when there is an increase of energy associated with a bond angle that has deviated from the preferred 109.5 angle.
Angle stain
