chapter 9.3 Flashcards
do genetic similarity contribute to to intelligence scores?
yes
what determines how much genetics will contribute to IQ scores?
the closeness of your relationship to that person
what is the heritability of intelligence?
40%-80%
what are 7 factors that impact the heritability of intelligence?
how different or similar people environments are
different geographical areas
quality nutrition
quality housing
quality schools
highly educated role models
supportive parents
what are behavioural genomics?
consist of several techniques for examining how specific genes interact with the environment to influence behaviours including intelligence
what is the primary focus of the behavioural genomics approach?
to link genes and brain regions that are related to cognitive abilities
how can intelligence levels be predicted?
by the collection of genes that individual inherit
how many genes co vary with intelligence test scores?
over 50
what are gene knockout studies?
involve removing a specific gene and comparing the characteristics of animals with and without that gene
what are the 6 environmental factors that impact intelligence?
birthorder
socioeconomic status
nutrition
stress
nootropic drugs
education
how does birthorder impact intelligence?
typically the first has the highest IQ and as each child is born they drop by a couple points
what is the reasoning as to why birth order matters?
the first born child has all the attention from the parents when they have energy and also older siblings have to act as teachers for the younger children so this leads to them having to understand things better so they can teach
how does socioeconomic status impact intelligence?
because the parents have the means to provide more books, magazines and newspapers and give them more resources to learn at a young age
how does nutrition impact intelligence?
if there is improper nourishment then the kids aren’t getting the the right fuel for their brain to operate at its maximum potential
how can stress impact intelligence?
the higher stressed environment the child grows up in, the more stress hormones the child will have in their brain and causing their cognitive functions to be less optimal
