Chapter 9 - Center of gravity Flashcards
What is the center of gravity?
A point in which a resultant force can be applied to counter act the force of gravity on that object.
How do u find the coordinates of the center of gravity?
X=Sx dw/Sdw
Y=Sy dw/Sdw
Z=Sz dw/Sdw
What is the difference between, center of gravity and center of mass?
Substitute dW=g dm into the center of gravity.
What is the difference between, center of mass and centroid of volume?
Substitute dm=p dV into the center of mass equation.
What is the centroid?
The centroid is the geometric center of a body.
What does the formulas of the centroid represent?
They represent the balance between the sum of moments of all the parts of the system and the moments of the resultant for the system.
How do you find the center of mass?
X=Sx dm/S dm
Y=Sy dm/S dm
Z=Sz dm/S dm
True or false: the centroid is always located inside the object.
False
When will the center of mass and centroid coincide?
When the density of the material is uniform throughout the object.
How do you find the centroid of a volume?
X=S_v x dV/S_v dV
Y=S_v y dV/S_v dV
Z=S_v z dV/S_v dV
