Chapter 9 Cellular Respiration Flashcards
what does cellular respiration accomplish
converts glucose and oxygen into ATP, co2, and water. aka ENERGY
write the general equation of cellular respiration
C6 CH12 06 + 02 –> 6CO2+ 6H20
glucose + water –> carbon dioxide and water
why is respiration necessary for living organisms
energy production
four phases of respiration
glycolysis, transition, Krebs cycle, and oxidative phosphorylation
where do each of the steps in respiration occur
glycolysis- cytoplasm
transition- inner membrane
Krebs- mitochondrial matrix
oxidative phosphorylation- inner mitochondrial membrane
describe glycolysis
the break down of glucose into 2 ATP and 2 NDAH, its anaerobic and occurs outside the mitochondria (cytoplasm)
what’s the end product of glycolysis
2 ATP, 2 NADH, and 2 pyruvate molecules used in the transition
describe the transition state
the 2 pyruvate molecules are oxidized to Acetyl CoA in order to enter the Mitochondrion
describe the citric acid cycle
Acetyl CoA gets further oxidized, its combines with Oxaloacetate to form critrate
