What is active transport
Active transport is when particles go up the concentration gradient but uses energy.
Give an example of active transport
An example of active transport is when marine animals have adapted to have salt glands to push salt out of their body so they don’t get water soaking in to them Salt glands maintain salt balance and allow marine vertebrates to drink seawater.
What is a concentration gradient
A concentration gradient is the difference between the high concentration and low concentration
What does ATP mean
ATP means energy before it is used
What does ADP mean
ADP means energy before it’s used
What is osmosis
Osmosis is the movement of across a semi permeable membrane from an area which contains low volume to an area with high levels of solute
What does semi permeable mean
Semi permeable= only lets a certain particles through. For example water
What is hypertonic
Hypertonic is a high concentration of solute compared to another place with solute
What is hypotonic
Hypotonic is a low concentration of solute compared to another place with solute
What is isotonic
Isotonic is where the amount of solute and water is balanced
How is the alveoli linked to diffusion
The alveoli are moist. Oxygen in the air dissolves quicker in this moisture and is picked up by the red blood cells in the capillaries. The walls of the alveoli are very thin so diffusion is quicker. The alveoli are folded increasing surface area which makes diffusion quicker
What is diffusion
Diffusion is the net movement of particles from an area of high concentration to a low concentration. The particles move randomly and end up having an equilibrium in the room or place that diffusion is happening. When this occurs the particles balance out and creates an even amount of particles in the high and low concentrated place
How can passive diffusion be quicker
Passive diffusion can be quicker at hotter temperatures because the particles have more energy and move round quicker at higher temperatures. The particles go in a state of excitement when they have more energy
How can surface can affect diffusion
Surface area affects diffusion because if there is a higher surface area there is a quicker time for diffusion
