Chapter 7 Gallbladder & Biliary Tree Flashcards
What is the biliary system composed of?
the gallbladder and the bile ducts
What is the role of the gallbladder and biliary system?
to drain and store bile from the liver until it is transported to the duodenum to aid in digestion
What is the gallbladder?
a pear shaped hollow organ located in the gallbladder fossa on the anteroinferior portion of the right lobe of the liver, closely associated with the main lobar fissure
How can the gallbladder be divided?
into the neck, body, and fundus
What is the fundus of the gallbladder?
the rounded portion at the distal portion
What is the neck of the gallbladder?
the narrower potion that connects to the cystic duct; located to the right of the porta hepatis; contains circular muscles that create spiral folds within the mucosa
What is the body of the gallbladder?
the widest portion that is the space between the fundus and neck
What is bile?
an alkaline fluid formed within the liver and stored in the gallbladder to be discharged into the duodenum for assistance in the digestion and absorption of fats and elimination of cholesterol and bilirubin from the body
How is bile transported?
via intrahepatic ducts that run alongside the portal veins and hepatic arteries within the liver
What is the common hepatic duct?
the union of the right and left hepatic ducts which marks the beginning of the extrahepatic biliary system
What is the cystic duct?
a duct from the gallbladder that joins the common hepatic duct anteriorly to the portal vein
What is the common bile duct?
the union of the cystic duct and common bile duct
What is the ampulla of Vater?
the opening in the duodenum wall that allows the main pancreatic duct (duct of Wirsung) through
What is the interchangeable name for the duct of Wirsung?
the main pancreatic duct
