Chapter 6 - Integumentary System Flashcards
apocrine glands
sweat glands that become active at puberty (produce body odor and respond to emotional upset / sexual arousal)
arrector pilli
bundle of smooth muscle cells attached to hair follicles that cause goose bumps when contracted
cutaneous membrane
the skin
dermal papillae
exterior projections of the dermis (ridges in skin)
dermis
support and protect the skin and deeper layers, assist in thermoregulation, and aid in sensation.
eccrine glands
help to maintain homoeostasis, primarily by stabilizing body temperature. many found on human feet
epidermis
outermost layer of the skin, covers the dermis
epithelial membrane
mucous, which contain glands; serous, which secrete fluid; and cutaneous which makes up the skin
exocrine gland
glands with ducts that secrete materials
integumentary system
the set of organs forming outermost layer of the body
keratin
structural protein in hair, skin, and nails
papillary layers
the thin top layer of the dermis. has connective tissue and blood vessels that give nutrients to the epidermis
pericardium
membrane enclosing the heart, consisting of an outer fibrous layer and an inner double layer of serous membrane
peritoneum
serous membrane lining the cavity of the abdomen and covering the abdominal organs
pleura
serous membrane lining lungs
